Area rowers eye Stotesbury Cup Regatta

»  Comments | Post a Comment

With the finals races of the Virginia Scholastic Rowing Championships having been postponed until May 22, this weekend's Stotesbury Cup Regatta will take on even greater significance for a few area crews because they did not already qualify for the SRAA Rowing Nationals in Sara-toga Springs, N.Y. on May 28-29.

According to VSRC meet director Lee West, who is a non-voting member of the US Rowing com-mittee that decides upon which boats get national berths, a top 10 showing in the time trials at Stotesbury would be a boon for a boat that has yet to qualify.

The list below is not an exhaustive one, but here is a list of boats for area schools which already have qualified as well as those whose coaches will petition the committee for a berth.

QUALIFIERS

Woodbridge boys senior four (Tyler Mazza, coxswain, stroke Matt Doody, Douglas Radoye, Aus-tin Squyres and bow Alex Narro) and lightweight eight (coxswain Brennan Kemp, stroke Brad Jones, Jacob Callahan, Ed Scully, Roland Dean, Dan Schrei, Nick McCullough, Randy Thomas, and bow Brian Hetrick)

Woodbridge girls senior four (Britt Schauefele, coxswain, stroke Allison Mayberry, Alexandra Oertel, Katherine Changes, bow Catherine Tallman), girls lightweight eight (Sarah Thomas, coxswain, stroke Amanda Wassenberg, Kara Pohlmeier, Brenna Hyzy, Sarah Jane Powell, Kelly McConnaughey, Sara Miriashtiani, Kim Wilder, and bow Ashley Biegun) and junior double (Michelle Stiltner and bow Sarah Burton).

The Woodbridge girls freshman eight also qualified due to its finish at the Ted Phoenix Regatta.

Hylton's boys varsity double of stroke Peter Booker and bow Cameron Brengleman as well as its girls' varsity double of Sarah Ianni and Stephanie Henry have already qualified.

Forest Park's girls varsity four of coxswain Nathalie Rosado, Kate Carvajal, Katelyn Poole, Amanda Esmacher, and Amanda Bond have already qualified.

Potomac and Gar-Field's boats will likely go the petition route (see below).

BOATS THAT WILL OR ARE LIKELY TO BE PETITIONED

It is likely Hylton will petition for its girls varsity quad of Stacy Marzac, Aubrey Timmons, Maureen O'Connor and Emily Uperti based on its showing at other regattas, while the boys light double of Nick Shirai and Luke Brackney will likely need a strong Stotesbury showing in order to be considered.

Gar-Field's junior four, which advanced to the VSRC finals with a third place showing in its heat, is a boat that will be petitioned, according to Indians' boys coach Wally Sorensen. The boat's lineup consisted entirely of novice rowers, coxswain Greg Hilton, stroke Nate John-son, Josh Lucas, Tim Arthur, and bow Kyle Roth.

The Gar-Field boys first varsity four of coxswain Chanc Russell, stroke Robert Schilpp, Kyle Ko-lomichuk, and bow Andrew Stanford, which advanced to the petit finals, is also a petition candi-date.

Forest Park's girls senior quad of Cassie Robbins, Meghan Frey, Colleen Gately, and Ciera Mead, which has won every race this season with an open water finish, but was unable to race this past Saturday is another likely petition candidate. It is fairly likely the Bruins will also petition for their boys junior eight boat. Girls coach Gretchen Thompson said this year may be the year Forest Park qualifies multiple boats for nationals for the first time. Mead was part of a junior quad that medaled at nationals last season.

Potomac may petition for all of its boats, including its varsity double of Mena Tarin and Gianina Rosario which had success at other regattas this season. Its girls light four raced well Saturday as well and is another likely petition candidate.

Successful Lake Mathews regatta for the Bruins

While many novices were racing at the Ted Phoenix Regatta on May 1, Forest Park's boys and girls varsity contingents were very successful at the Lake Mathews Invitational Regatta. Five boats won gold medals, including the girls varsity quad, a girls varsity eight, a boys varsity eight and first four, and a mixed varsity eight.

The boys second eight and a girls varsity four took silver medals, while in the coaches race, For-est Park boys coach Mike Cox and girls coach Thompson combined with coaches from South County to take second.

A total of 19 schools participated, Thompson said.
