Last year, Christ Chapel Academy’s Stephen Brown was the youngest player in the boys 3-point shootout field for Hoops Fest 16. But age didn’t stop the freshman from wowing the crowd at Hylton High School to capture the championship.
Brown is back again this year to defend his title as Hoops Fest 17 returns to Hylton for a second straight year.
Hoops Fest is an annual event sponsored by the InsideNova Network that raises money for families in need in Prince William County by bringing together the area’s top high school boys and girls basketball players for a night of various skills competitions.
Hoops Fest started in 1996 when Woodbridge High School hosted the event. That night, $4,000 was raised to help Lee Thompson Jr. who needed prosthetics on both his legs after coming down with spinal meningitis.
Since then, Hoops Fest has raised over $110,000 for families in need in Prince William County.
Last year, the event was held at Hylton High School and raised an event-record $13,000 for Hylton graduate Josh Himan.
This year, all proceeds will be donated to Trevor Blake, a 10-year-old Woodbridge resident who on Aug. 14, 2007 was diagnosed with cancer. Trevor has battled through five rounds of chemotherapy and two stem cell transplants.
The money raised will go to Trevor and his family to help defray medical expenses. The donations will be part of a non-profit organization called “Trevor’s Treasures,” which raises money and collects new toys to help Trevor with his medical procedures. Trevor also uses “Trevor’s Treasures” to help fellow cancer patients and their families.
This year’s event will start at 7 p.m. with the doors opening at 5:30 p.m. Admission is $10 with all the proceeds going to Trevor and his family.
Besides Brown last year, Hylton’s Sydney White won the girls 3-point title, Forest Park’s Daniel Brent and Emma Kruse won the two-ball title and Hylton’s Kendall Hargrove won the slam-dunk title.
White and Brent are back from last season.
