Woodbridge High School senior Darius Parson has committed to Central Connecticut State University for football.
The all-Cardinal District linebacker made an official visit to the school this past weekend.
Tom Buzzo, the former Liberty High School football coach who became Central Connecticut’s defensive coordinator earlier this month, was instrumental in recruiting Parson. Buzzo’s son Travis is also committed to Central Connecticut State.
Parson will sign his national letter of intent Wednesday, the first day high school football seniors can do so.
Parson was originally committed to Syracuse University, but Parson re-opened his recruiting after Syracuse University’s football program informed him in the fall they were out of available athletic scholarships for the next school year.
Parson committed to the Orangemen in August, but his commitment was non-binding.
The decision by Syracuse came down to numbers. The school’s coaching staff told Woodbridge head football coach Kevin Smith they had more offers than athletic scholarships to give with a number of fifth-year players expected to come back for the Orangemen.
Smith said that Parson wasn’t the only Syracuse recruit to be affected by this.
Parson received interest from other schools, but they were holding off on offering because he had not met freshman eligibility standards for admission.
“Tons of people would love to have him, but they were waiting to see if he qualified with this SAT score,” Smith said.
Parson has yet to achieve the necessary SAT score, but Central Connecticut still wanted him to sign Wednesday.
